Superstitious Beliefs

Main article:
10/10/10
By: Cherryben M. Portacio

October 10, 2010 will bring about the unique-to-this-century calendar alignment of 10/10/10. There are three possible outcomes of this much talked date this month:
1. Something good happens — Though there is no scientific basis for this belief, lots of people still consider this date as lucky. Positivity is merely based on spiritualism, faith, and innate optimism.
2. Nothing happens— Just like 09-09-09, 08-08-08 and some other calendar alignments, Some people believes 10-10-10 will be just another day on earth. An unusual date number sequence doesn’t mean that something will happen.
3. Something bad happens— Just like the first outcome, There is no scientific basis for this belief. The reason behind this thinking is the negative side of reality for everything is in mess today.

So, what is really is it about the number 10?
Some suggested that this trinumeral might be some sort of heavenly meaning. The Holy Scripture featured numbers and frequently associates them with persistent themes. Regarding this, the number 10 is linked with unity of order. Best example is the Ten Commandments which are the set of laws by God in order for us people to be good and humble.
Some other uses of the number 10 in Bible include the 10 plagues inflicted on Egypt before the Exodus, 10 generations from Adam to Noah, and Jesus' parable of the ten virgins.

Women’s Subtleness
By: Cherryben M. Portacio

Women are known to be a delicate creature. That’s the reason why having a period is also associated with plenty of superstition. Below are some of what lots of Filipino girls hears from the elders.

1.      During the first time of menstruation, WASH your face using your menstrual
BLOOD.
Sounds really gross, Isn’t it? Crazy but true. I know some people who really did this belief. They said that this must be done to avoid having problems with pimples.
2.      JUMP on the three steps of ladders
This is what a woman should also do during her first time having period. This is said to be helpful to grow taller during puberty age. To tell you honestly, I did this and yet I am still 5”2 until now. What is more devastating fact for me is I am not in puberty age anymore.
3.   AVOID eating GREEN mangoes
My mother strongly believes in this. According to her, eating green mangoes   can result to having a stain on face that can make a girl really ugly. Because of what my mum always reminds me, sometimes I get really afraid of eating that fruit.

New Year for new life based on superstitions?
 By: Kristel Rae Samson

Superstitions are part of our lives. It can be passed generation to generation. One of the famous superstitions that Filipino believed is the superstitions for New Year. Let me discuss the superstitions in New Year, the most famous superstitions is kissing your families and loved-one when the clock turns 12:00midnight.  They also say that what you’ve done in the first day of New Year will be similar in the whole year. New born babies also called lucky when they are born in New Year. Wearing polka dots clothes in New Year will make you lucky and rich, for every circle symbolizes coins.
Jump 12 times on the New Year for it help you grow taller. Make some noise as you can to scare the bad evils in your place. Filling up the cupboards such as rice, sugar, coins and salt for it signifies important. Having 12 round fruits in the table signifies money and prosperity.
Open all doors and windows to give you good fortune in the coming year. Eat sticky rice to make your family closer every year, and give you sticky fortune. Eat pancit or pasta to have long life. So in New Year you know what to do and not to do.

                                                        …for a brighter tomorrow?
                                                                 By Merlita Garing
Milks, vitamins, food and etc. It is just some of the instrument used to make us smart. Of course, we do not want to be at the bottom or at the last. We all want to have an competitive mind, it is our big asset to others. It just like, if you have it, everything will follow. That is why there are so many medicines and milk invented and produces to have a better and active mind. But before everything is invented our society knows some superstitious beliefs as a step to have a brighter mind.

Let us start with a baby. All mommies want her baby to be smart. That is why, their doing everything that they can do. While inside their womb they sing so that their child would have a good voice. They also put earphones to their tummy so that their baby could listen to it. And the first hair cut of the baby must kept inside the book. They believe that if you did these things your baby would grow smart. They want to be proud to their children someday.

The students also have their strategy in studying. There are also some superstitious beliefs that they use while reviewing their notes. Some students use their book as their pillow so that it would be easy for them to remember what’s inside the book. They also ate peanuts before the exam while reviewing their notes. And they believe that the best time to study is early morning, because if you sleep after you review your notes you will forgot it. Also taking a bath should not be done after you study it might wash away all the things that you memorized.

know Friday the 13th?
by Jun Frank C. Condrada

Who among of us are not aware of the superstition Friday the thirteen? It’s known not only in the Philippines but is also widely known in the whole world. It is believed through the years that the said date only brings bad luck. Some people take cautions that they avoid traveling to places and even going outside their houses thinking that they might just get into trouble and worse is an accident could happen. As this day comes, people have always something to say which somehow supports their position with this superstitious belief.
But only few of us know exactly when and where it came from. It is said that this belief started in 1300s, across Europe when the pope clement V decided to obliterate the knights’ templar who happened to be the church’s enemies. On October 13, 1307, the knights were captured, tortured mercilessly and finally burned at the stake as heretics. The tragedy is still resonated in this modern culture known as the Friday the 13th which is considered unlucky. Many have speculated that the date was cursed and has also been associated with other superstitions. But whatever this day might brings to us, it is only God who knows what will happen and what would the day bring to us.

Don't wear red, my friend
By Aira Burawin

One of the superstitions that I can recall that my parents told me was, to NEVER wear red when you are attending a funeral. They said that it is offensive because in Chinese (my dad has a Chinese blood), red is a lucky color and it also signifies happiness. So it simply means that when you go to a funeral wearing red, you are celebrating the death of that person.
I can also recall my a-ma (that is grandmother in Chinese) telling me that the spirit of the departed person will follow you wherever you go if you are wearing red because it is an attracting color for the spirits.
But as I grow up, I can hear different superstitions when it comes to funerals. They say that when the family of the dead is wearing white, it means, the family is accepting the death of their beloved, and the family will wear black if they are not.
So many superstitions, is there really a scientific proof behind these things? Well, I guess none. Those are just lame myths created by old people.
Yes, there’s no harm in following superstitions but as for my opinion, it does not matter on what color of clothing you are going to wear on a funeral. What matters is, you grieved for that person and you shared your deepest sympathy to the people he or she left.

9 months of creepy old sayings!
By Nina Dolatre
It’s really hard to bear a child for nine months in your womb, there are such things and superstitions that need to follow according to our elders. Things have been so complicated for me when I was on that stage.  Nine months is too long for me to follow those old saying told by my mother. Among these sayings one of the hardest things for me to do is not to take a bath every night before I sleep. Being pregnant that time I always felt hot and irritated. I can sleep well and I cannot work well when I’m stinky. There was a time when I really need not to take a bath because I chill for the whole day and I have to go to work. This was the worst day for me! I cannot work well and do my stuffs. Another saying that I heard is I should not be wearing necklace and bracelet. For what reason? They said that wearing necklace and bracelet has the tendency to affect the baby; the chord will stick around my baby’s neck. Duh? How come it could happen? But as times goes by I don’t follow this saying, because as pregnant, I want to feel beautiful in my best way as I can. Another saying that I heard and of course (again) need to follow is not to look to ugly thing and pictures, because my baby might get its look! OMG? Again? A-uh! No this time! I love reading and watching ghost stories, does it mean something? Of course not!  If this thing was true does it mean my baby will look like ghost? Ahaha! Creepy old sayings. But I the end we are the one will decide if we or will not follow this sayings, besides according to elders again “wala namang mawawala”.

                                                                     Sukob
                                                         By Juztine Dennize Santos

Filipinos are naturally superstitious.

The Filipino culture is rich with beliefs and superstitions, especially when it comes to highlights in one's life.

One of the famous is the “Sukob”. There are two kinds: sukob sa patay (death) and sukob sa kasal (marriage). The essence of the sukob belief is this: if somebody dies or somebody gets married within the immediate family members, you have to wait for a full year before getting married or else misfortune will arise from it: be it loss of material possessions, divorce, or worse, death.

“Sukob” is like a curse, especially with marriage or weddings. According to beliefs, one should not marry within the same year that an immediate family also got married or when an immediate family member passed away. The repercussion of not following this belief is that bad luck will befall upon the newly-married couple’s life.

I had watched the movie entitled “Sukob”, starring Kris Aquino and Claudine Barreto. It shows what really “Sukob” is. The misfortune that can arise from not heeding sukob was concretized in the movie. No sooner had Kris Aquino gotten married (of course following all the advice of their parents) than bad luck started following them, even involving their close relatives. A "happily ever after" story it's not. They become baffled, especially since they did follow all the beliefs laid out before them. When they finally realize the cause, it was due to a big lie that was kept hidden from them for many years.

Some Filipinos still believe in this superstition. Others follow it just to make sure that nothing bad will happen to their married life. There are also a few who don’t believe at all and just go on with their plans and leave all else to the Omniscient One.

Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD. - Job 1:21
By: Michael Angelo Angeles

While Contemplating these past few weeks about a perfect topic regarding superstitions, Ive decided to lay out all those typical mumbo jumbo that you may hear from almost everyone and focus on something new, something fresh. The quote from Job 1:21, fits perfectly to the most popular Filipino superstar today, and please spare me the usual pleasantries because were not here to talk about a little Timbaland look alike who recently had her huge huge HUGE break in the Fag show Glee. I'm talking about the Mexican Destroyer, the best Pound for Pound king in the boxing ring, the pride of the country, his excellency Manny Pacman Pacquiao.

If you're a boxing fan like i am, you should have followed the rise of the former panadero from Malabon. Emmanuel D. Pacquiao may have one of the most colorful rags to riches story ever told, presently serving as a public servant in Sarangani province, its been a good run for the Filipino boxer. Amidst the recent speculations and mud thrown to him by the press, we have to agree that he shows shows a good example to all those "bigshot" seniors in the House of Representatives who do nothing but squabble and linger about lost issues, at least we have to agree that a freshman like Manny could knock the sense out of the fat obnoxious leaders seated at the house.

But certainly we all have heard of the superstition that lingers in the Filipino champ. I haven't been properly updated about this but i believe that it was not properly documented that everytime Pacman won, something bad happens, it's like his rise to success has it's consequences, now i havent been able to be updated about the situation but since the Oscar Dela Hoya fight, where the actor Marky Cielo died, when the Ricky Hatton fight happened, so did the rice shortage here in the Philippines, before the destruction of Miguel Cotto, Marikina, Pasig, and the whole of Manila was knocked out by typhoon Ondoy. Now im not here to rain on the Pacman's parade, i admit that since the destruction of the Golden Boy, i became a believer that Pacman is the man, this might just be pure coincidence and i may just make up stuff connecting unconnected topics to raise something interesting, but by clear observation and further research maybe we can connect the dots.

It maybe somewhat offensive to some of the hardcore Pacman fans out there but lets face it that you cant actually have everything, and if ever the big man up there gives us, he also takes something in return. If we look at the delays regarding the fight of the century where the undefeated meets the pound for pound king, lets just look at it as somewhat a blessing in disguise, we may be the lucky generation who may witness the fight, but if the consequence is rather dire, something worth the price of the "gravity" of the fight, well, I for one don't want this fight to happen. I would like to apologize if i haven't been able to write as pessimistically as before, its just I am currently having a bit of problems in stuff, I know that this is not an excuse, and i promise to make up to my past trash.

BROKEN HEAD IN THE MIRROR
By: Ivy Joana Habana

Have you ever heard the saying that, whenever you look at the mirror and you saw a broken head of yours you are going to die?.

Filipinos are very much fund of "superstitions", but what do we really mean by that?

"Superstitions" are beliefs that occur in an event that do not really have a connection in a certain phenomena. It is actually sayings that pertain to unfortunate events like death, sickness, misfortune and etc.,

Now, I have here one of the beliefs that Filipinos live up to. They say that whenever you look at the mirror and you saw your head is broken you will going to die. How true is this?
Are there really proofs that this happen?

Filipinos Indeed, are fan of "superstitions" it is already a part of our culture. Most of our
ancestors really believe in this, they really follow the do's and dont's of superstitions.

But in this generation, yes we may believe but we are not 100% believe if it will really happen.

Yes, superstition is already part of our daily lives. But we must remember that there is God who will always guide and protect us. We should also remember that there is no harm in following those beliefs, but it life will always depends on our actions and on how we live with it.

Say ‘I do’ on 10-10-10!
By Ana Besa

In China, the cross represents the number 10 - as the totality of the numbers.
Just like 8-8-8, October 10, 2010 is a lucky date for soon-to-be-wed couples. 10-10-10 is the perfect 10 wedding date. Many couples have scheduled their sacred ceremony that will bond them for life.
In Shanghai, which is said to be the 2nd most expensive city to be married to, the wedding office announced that they will be open, even on a Sunday to give the couples a perfect wedding. It is rare for local government workers to work overtime, but because of this wonderful date, the wedding registration office will give way for the couples who wanted to be married on this special date.

According Alice Huo, a future 10-10-10 bride, they believe that a good date will allow them a good beginning.
Not only in Asia, also in the Western side, couples aim for this auspicious date. Like Helen Kalogjera and Jason Moore, who will be wed on a date they said they’ll always remember.
This date has no astrological meaning behind it.  This makes it propitious, since it only comes once in a century. The next 10-10-10 will happen on Oct 10, 2110, making the date this year a once in a lifetime occurrence.
But still, no matter what luck this number has, it will still depend on the couple if they will be beside each other in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; from that day forward until death do they part.

Poems

A new awaits me…
By: Jun Frank Condrada

Today is a brand new day
That is certainly a new way
For me in this uncertain land
A brand new me is at hand

In the world of imperfection
An imperfect person like me suits in
Inevitably, I commit mistakes
that can change me depends on my ways

Every day that comes my way
Cheers me or even messes me
I gladly embrace that day
Truly a lesson that fits me daily

So whatever mistake I’ve done
I assure myself only one
There is a lesson I might take
That Truly makes a new me

A New Me
By: Nina Dolatre

They say I’m loud, and always wanna shout.
They thought I’m weird having may own trip.
This is me for people who don’t know me.
And I’ll never pretend for them to like me.

As normal teenage girls do,
I also experience a life without limits.
Eat well, go disco, go shop, drink and have fun.
But now everything is in control and limit.

I cannot walk away anytime like a dog.
Eat like a pig, Sleep like a bat
And fly free like a bird in the skies.
Everything has change.

A new family changes me.
A mature and brave me!
Responsibility is my policy!
My baby is my priority.

But who am’ I really?
I have simple life and it’s lively.
Things maybe happening often.
But I wanna live it to the fullest!

“Differing Me”
by: Cherryben Portacio
Having anusual name like Cherryben,
makes people stop and ask “What’s that again?”
Beyond that weird call is a bit bizarre,
unless you know me at heart and by so far.

Loving human describes what I am,
though being loner is what I am right now.
I miss all that’s in my heart above all my family,
I’m wishing divinity can clearly hear me.

My aura can blow you outlying; My thoughts can keep you intimately;
Very happy for one soul that stayed for three years with me.
Lots on my mind that is locked like forever,
Searching for many someone who will understand me better.

Creative yet undiscovered; Responsive yet unnoticed
If you’re a friend then you should know the real me,
far different from snub and bitchy, in actuality;
I really hope for the time when people will stop judging me.

Butterfly
by: Kristel Rae Samson

Butterfly is like a girl’s life.
Every part of me is a cycle,
Every cycle shaped me for who I am
Every experience made me stronger than before.

Dad, that becomes my protector,
when I was a child until now when I’m in need.
Mom, that becomes my guardian,
when things comes unexpected.

Don’t be deceived in my outer side,
For it give you more from my inner side.
My families and friends that become my nectar,
To feed me love, care and provide me things that I needed.

I’ll spread my wings,
To make my dreams come true.
I know God is with me,
to protect and guide me.

Butterfly has a short life span,
Just like us,
Make every moment of your life unforgettable.
I’ll fly away, but one thing is for sure, I will be back where I from.

Unfeigned
 by: Ana Besa

'twas just another rainy day
Where everything seems blurred as I pray
Extending my hand a bit,
My heart felt like it was thrown into the pit.

In a world where everything is crumbling down,
I let my tears fall
Into the wet ground where it wouldn't be noticed
By people who never really cared at all.

I am not a lie
I never intended to pry
It's just that I want to be connected,
With the string which made them united.

The smiles I've been giving,
The laughs I've been making,
Was there anyone who've seen the real me?
They'd rather have a French loaf for free.

Even though I was a lie at first,
Everyone can hear my real voice now.
This is something I've always dreamt
This is how it is really meant.

MY PERSPECTIVE
 by: Aira Joyce Burawin

Sometimes I’m feeling that I’m different from everyone else
Seeing things I don’t want to see
Feeling things that I don’t want to feel
Sometimes, things are so unreal.

But why should I bother and wonder
About the things that don’t really matter
As long as I have God as my father
I know I can be whoever.

I love to sing, I love to dance
I love to travel whenever there is a chance.
On all the foods that I ate,
What I hate are chocolates.
Dressing up is really not my game,
But being the best daughter of God, that’s my aim.

I don’t mind facing storms on my life,
Even if it hurts and cuts like a knife.
With God, I will stand still
Because my purpose is to live my life according to his will.

Just “Juz”
By: Jhuztine Santos

Dalagang mahilig pag-usapan ang numero,
Kahit sa gatas ay talagang umaayaw ito,
Ngunit hinding-hindi nagpapauto, nagpapaloko at nagpapatalo,
Lalo't maraming natututunan sa paglalakbay sa paraisong mundo.

Sa pagsayaw, pagtatalumpati at pag-arte ay maaasahan,
Ngunit huwag na huwag lamang sa kantahan,
Kilala sa kapansin-pansin nitong kasuotan,
Ngunit totoong may mabuting kalooban at angking katalinuhan.

Sa bawat paghakbang ng aking mga paa,
Kahit saan man ako lupalop mapunta,
Walang takot akong maglalakbay mag-isa,
Hanggang matagpuan tunay kong tadhana.

Isang payapa at napakagandang paraiso,
'Yan ang tunay na mukha ng mundo,
Paniniwala ko'y sa'king paglalakbay dito,
Tunay na pag-ibig at kasiyaha'y matatagpuan ko.

Ako man ay nabibigo at nagkakamali madalas,
Bumabangon pa rin at tinatama pagtahak ng landas,
Dahil hindi mapapantayan angking ganda't lakas,
Nang nag-iisa at walang katulad na si Juz.

My life is like vandalism
It shouts everywhere
Always want to be heard
Even in a darkest place

I always wish to write
All things I could not say
But I don’t know how to start
Not like a ready writer of news

I am not a writer
I just want to express myself
It always serves as my tongue
Every time I’m not ready to speak

This time,
I speak what I have composed
Exploring the distance I want to reach I let myself and my words to fly
Until I reaches the sky.

Tree
By: Ivy Habana

As it gets older, it goes stronger
That is how I see life
As I get older,I grew stronger.

But doesn’t mean I am perfectly grown-up
Yes. With my age and with what
my friends say, I am mature.

I compare my life as a tree
A tree that grows boulder as it age
Not because I am perfectly like a tree
But because I want to be as strong as a tree.

Now life seems to give me trials
Trials hat I will surely surpass
With the strength that I possessI will surely face it all
Because as I get older,I go stronger.

I may stumble and fall

thunder may smite me,

try stop me
but smirk at you i will,

underneath the trials
i will not be shaken
i will still be as fun,
and adventure-driven

for i have faith in the lost,
trust in the divine,
blind hope that succeed i will

A walk through Manila

Walking discovers the beauty of manila
by: Jun Frank Condrada

Everybody excitedly enjoyed the plan going to manila and visit some famous trademarks of the city. Each and every one of the hype’s publisher staffs gladly want to join the trip, like it’s going to be a field trip, back in elementary an in high school. Partly yes, this is a literally a walk through manila.

On September 14, the day of journey, we planned to meet in Recto Isetann. And just the day has started for us; a snatcher was being captured right before our eyes! A very good prelude to start our day! Whatever, we just disregarded the “unexpected incident” and went through to our journey.

A walking marathon happened as expected from recto, we first visited the San Sebastian church, Quiapo church, Escolta, the walled city of Intramuros, the city’s largest clock in manila city hall, the historical Luneta park, manila grandstand and just behind it is the latest attraction of the city, the Manila Ocean Park where lively dolphins and other fishes swim “what do you expect?”, and lastly is the famous manila bay at night. The different colors of lights that brightened the bay eased the aches of our feet which we didn’t even notice when we’re on the walking marathon.

To this trip in manila, we discoved its uniqueness and simplicity of its beauty by simply walking through the place. We couldn’t have seen it if we use other means of visiting the places.
We could now say, “Iba ang ganda ng maynila”

Trip to manila
By:Ana besa
Literally walking around Manila is pretty exhausting. It was tiring, yes, but when you're in a group of fun people, it never gets boring. From recto to Quiapo to Intramuros. Though I had to come home early, I seriously enjoyed exploring Manila. Different places. Different poeple. Diffrent sceneries. People should discover what's in store for them in Manila and they should know what makes the city different from others. (minus the Quirino grand Stand drama and the chaos it brought) FUN. FUN Day!.

Conquered the City
By: Ivy Habana

I was late! The call time is at 10:30 in the afternoon, I arrived at 11:30. Honestly, I was so excited that day! I love going to different places. I love exploring new places, though my school is located in Manila, and I have been to many places in Manila, I believe I still have so many things and places to visit in the city. MANILA - everytime I hear this word I immediately think of holdappers, garbages, bad smell, beggars and etc., Recto to Legarda then here comes Quiapo the DVD Capital of Manila then Escolta going to Intramuros then Manila City Hall now comes to Luneta passed by the Quirino Grand Stand then went inside the Manila Ocean Park after a 30 minute rest, walked to Baywalk, atlast!. It was dead tiring, but it was all WORTH THE EFFORT. I really had fun. We really had fun. I'm proud to say that, despite of all the bad smell I inhaled, the smell of the people's sweat I passed by, the hunger, most especially the thirst. . . I CONQUERED MANILA!

It's a Field Trip!
 By: Merlita Garing

September 15, 2010. I prepare myself for a long distance walk not because of alay-lakad and not to join the aktibista's walk out. Our group had a tour in Manila. It's a walkathon from Recto - Legarda - Quiapo - Intramuros - SM Manila - Manila City Hall - Luneta - Quirino Grand Stand - Manila Ocean Park and our last desination, Baywalk. We've walked literally around Manila. It's a very great experience. I felt like a kid having my school field trip and was amazed from the things I just discovered that day. My way to school passes the streets in Manila. I find common and ordinary, but because of the tour the stories behind it unveiled to me.

The Concrete Jungle
Mike Angeles

Unmasking the 2 faces of a city I love
It’s been 5 days since the last time I visited the HYPE page, and before I start I must ask my deepest apologies for not writing a perfectly good article, see I didn’t cite some references, and I forgot to put my byline, so my deepest apologies to the readers.  Last Saturday, I must say that the launching of the HYPE website has been successful because we got everything what we wanted.  The challenge came when the professor noted us to make a “walking tour of Manila”.  I had a mix of emotions when I heard the order come down like gummy bears from the sky, I was excited at the same time nervous, we got to tour one of the greatest cities in the country, but with just so little time, its rather sad that the week went by so fast.  And tomorrow, another chapter begins, I’m just hoping that it won’t be something that bores me, hmmm come to think of it, so far, I haven’t found anything boring in free writing, it’s like a wrestling cage match, NO RULES apply.  And before I get to bore you, I proudly present my view of Manila….
It’s been a long time since I get to venture Manila, and I must say that I didn’t even notice a 5 hour walkathon around the city, from Claro Recto, Quiapo, Sta Cruz, Escolta, Intramuros, Luneta, Baywalk, Malate, and finally, United Nations Avenue, I must say if it wasn’t for issues like time, money, and aching feet, id definitely go on around one more time.  Walking along the route was somewhat enlightening, if you get to be a small time writer like me, you’d think of a million things to write, a million angles to prep your article with, it’s a rather normal thing for writers, I hope, for my sake.  But setting everything aside the experience was amazing.
While walking it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to notice the different sides of this city.  The infamous “namamalengkeng mata” see’s all or something like that, by walking thru the twists and turns of the city I noticed that there always was an underbelly around the corner, a “rotten” vegetable among the heap.  The things that make you just shake your head because you know for yourself that whatever you do, even though you want to be an advocate of change like all those dead idiots that dreamed, and all the living idiots in power who dream of a straightening some crooked road or something, (not pointing fingers reallyJ) you can’t, simply because change must come within them, but then they tell you that they have no choice and they’re just forced to go with the flow and accept their destiny, or fate, or whatever cosmic event you could think of.  It’s a rather an endless debate of who’s right and who’s wrong.  Anyway I’m not ashamed of these so called “rotten” vegetables or, quoting from the book of Neil Gaiman Neverwhere, where he described beggars as “individuals falling thru the cracks of society” it’s a good book by the way, worth reading.  Anyway I’m proud of these people, because they are the main elements of the city, since I was a kid I grew up along the streets of Manila, I started college venturing these streets and I always give them a smile and utter words like “only in Manila”, not that I’m proud or anything, it’s just that these people add up the spice in the city, it’s like our version of those homeless guys in the States, or in London, or in any other city.   Some might say that all I need is to get mugged by these people, but hey, there are types of bums and I ain’t interested in messing with the muggers and addicts.  Who is anyway?
Walking along the streets of United Nations Avenue at night with all those lights and sights, I stopped by the middle of Maria Orosa and United Nations and I simply stood there and reminisced the times I’ve been there, so many memories since I was a kid.  My point you ask? Well I bet that these things don’t happen only to me, because if you was born here in the city, there will be one place amidst the rotten apples, the elite, the low bargained clothes, food, the cheap movies, the busy streets, there would be that place here, where you would just stand and feel that evertything would be alright.. or something like that

Trip to Manila
By; Kristel Rae Samson
As we walked around Manila, another experience for us, to see personally the tourist spots here in our place. Another bonding for our group, this time we enjoyed walking, talking, laughing and eating. As a broadcast communication student, we need to capture moments. We walked Recto to Roxas Boulevard, just imagine how far was that. Supposedly the last destination of our group was Ocean Park, but our lovely editor wanted us to go at Baywalk, and we also wanted to go at Star City, but we decided to go home at 7pm or 7:30pm. Even though the heavy rain made our life worst, we stayed at Intramuros. Yet it was fun and memorable experience to us. A walked through Manila was great.

Walking thru manila..
By:  Aira joyce Burawin
Our experience is indeed a blast! Form Recto to Legarda, to the streets of Quiapo, to Escolta, Post Office, Intramuros (plus the heavy rain, we’re stranded there for an hour or so), the obstacles we faced just to get to SM Manila (flood), my first time I LUNETA PARK. Yes! Your eyes are not fooling you. It’s my first time in Luneta! And what Jun Frank and I experienced there is a nice welcome treat, KUMUNOY! Then we went to Quirino Grandstand. The historical Quirino Grandstand, the feeling there is so heavy and we can’t explain and understand why. After there, we headed to Manila ocean Park! Yehey! Nice view! And our last stop? Roxas Boulevard’s Baywalk. So many places in one whole day! And oh, did I forgot to mention that we went to those places thru walking? Nice one right?!

 A unique city
By Cherryben M. Portacio

Last Tuesday (September 14, 2010), Hypers went crazy touring the city of Manila . To tell you honestly, my perception in that place is not that positive. Pollution and people almost give me Goosebumps whenever I think about our capital city. I grew up in a province-like place in Caloocan and maybe the reason why I feel not so secure in Manila city is because it is the total opposite of my situate. Want to know what are the other things that makes Manila exciting for Hypers? Here are some on my groups list:

WEATHER
The very hot condition in the morning suddenly turned into a heavy rain in the afternoon. What an experience too because in just a matter of hour, the flood is already in a knee-level. My group had no choice but to ride on a pedicab and pay 30 bucks just to be in a much comfortable place like SM Manila. And take note, we are only two blocks away from there! We were trapped. Trapped by the black waters of Manila . You know what is the best part? People around us (including us) still keeps on laughing and giggling though it really look like a miserable situation for us.

SHOPPING and FOOD
Manila have great shopping places and foods to taste. From Divisoria to Quiapo and even just in every corner of the street, Manila has something to sell. From the expensive restaurants up to the street foods and from the grandest malls up to the tiangges, you can have what you want depending on your budget. Too bad I don’t have enough money that day.
As what lots of ManileƱo says, The life in the city where almost everyone wanted to leave at is very hard yet dreadfully fun—as long as you have money.

MYSTERIES
A place like Quiapo can really offer bizarre experience for everyone. Fortune tellers and witchcrafts are in every corner, It is also a very freaky place because you can feel that someone is looking towards you and you really need to seriously take care of your belongings.

VINTAGE INFASTRUCTURES
Manila city is a very historical place here in the Philippines . No wonder lots of tourists always include Manila as their first destination whenever they go in our country. You can feel the history behind every walls and sightings in Manila . Some of the buildings were built since the Spanish colonialism, and some are just forgotten like the metropolitan theatre.

Lastly, still the best part in Manila are the locals. You can never feel outcast because the people are always smiling though not all are nice. In visiting Manila , Don’t forget to brace yourself because it has lots of things to offer—either good or bad. Just have fun and take care!

SHATTERED GLASS

A Movie critique

A lesson from Spidey’s uncle, the real man behind the Jedi, putting down the light saber, grabbing the pen, and a writing principle that’s not just for show.
With great power comes great responsibility” wise words from the late Ben Parker, foster father-slash-uncle of our very own friendly neighborhood Spiderman, the phrase that could easily be accustomed to everyone no matter what level or anything, well considering a more real life touch we could apply this to our political leaders, (yeah right, let’s stop this before we cross another topic) anyway, if only Ben Parker had lived that faithful night to watch young Peter graduate college and move on to become a measly photographer for a paper company by day and web spinning crime fighter by night, he must’ve  been proud.  Well the phrase the great uncle Ben left applies best to every living journalist continuously practicing the profession.  They say that journalism is one of the most sensitive and delicate jobs known to man, simply being a journalist requires us to be responsible, a trait never to be questioned because it’s a journalist’s job to provide information, not just information but credible and up to date information to keep the world aware of what’s happening everywhere.  Life would be hard without journalist’s, it’s like walking blind, not knowing if terrorist’s have rained down from the mountains and are continuously going on an endless killing spree.  That’s why it’s un-debatable that journalism definitely wins via unanimous decision over creative writing, anyone can be a creative writer but not everyone can be a journalist blah blah blah and all that mumbo jumbo.  So being a journalist requires discipline, hard work, honesty, credibility, traits not easily acquired but definitely abused, or something like that, because let’s face facts here, we see journalist’s today claiming that they’re credible stuff like that, but what we-the people-don’t see is how powerful people manipulate these so called “credible” journalist’s bending the ideals forged by ethical practices that these guys memorized with heart and soul while working through college, gagging their mouths to bring out “honest” information regarding a scandal of all sorts, and  providing an easy escape in the form of fame, fortune, a brand new car, and stuff to forget that hard work comes with the application written in “fine print” as so some might say it.  We can’t blame them, if they don’t cooperate, they’re either gagged by a mud, kidnapped, raped, cut to pieces, buoyed out the Pasig river, or simply shower them with bullets in the middle of the road, and voila they’re on tomorrow’s paper, written by other gagged journalist’s who have no choice but to comply, as the old saying goes if you can’t beat them, join them.  If only every journalist has powers like Spiderman or Superman, then we would have a force untainted by corruption and tyranny, but this is not a comic book, this here is real life.
Anybody would write something hoping to win a Pulitzer or something with the same context or idea, you’ll get it, it’s the thought that counts as so they might say, but will you be willing to fabricate a story in order to gain a reputation that could either lay down the red carpet or a woody plank?  As they say in the rusted commas quotations and stuff, no secret is safe and all that bullcrap. Welcome to the world of Stephen Glass, a writer for The New Republic, guilty of fabricating articles like “Probable Cause, Rock You Morons, Hack Heaven” and more.  Stephen Glass is a real person, and if you do your research you will find out that he fabricated a lot of articles, although it’s a rather disgusting act to imagine this is the grim reality that haunts the profession, every journalist has his case of fabricating a story or two; it’s just a matter of getting yourself caught.  The reality may be chilling but that’s life, can’t do anything about it.  They say that editors often value sensation over substance, gives them a good rep. or something like that and its these young writers with wild, raging hormones and all that young blood crap who take the fall as expendable shock troopers.  It’s sad but that’s the reality.

Young Anakin Skywalker, a promising Jedi from the words of his masters put’s down his light saber and renounces both the dark side and the force to portray the character of Stephen Glass.  Hayden Christensen, a Canadian actor known for portraying Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars 2 and 3 proved to show a not so different side of himself in the character of a young associate editor for the white house  observing closely on the last parts of the film, you can see that “Anakin” aura emanating from him.  But this actually gave the movie a chill because you can feel that the character was almost like Stephen Glass himself, facial expressions, and ticks and all those things.  Critics praised Christensen for showcasing a baby faced character mixing sincerity and fraud, manipulation and charm until you can’t tell one from another.  Christensen is also shown in movies like Jumper, Awake, and Takers; now imagine if he infused Jedi powers and teleportation within the character Stephen Glass, he’d be unstoppable.
The group huddled and agreed that Shattered Glass; a movie by Billy Ray is an eye opener not only for us, but for every practitioner, it’s the eerie thought that he could mix these emotions to squeeze out of some situations, using all his influence inside the publication to apply a certain amount of pressure on their new editor, we recommend that every aspiring journalist should have a chance to watch this film because it embodies the real world within journalist’s a world where fabricating is a normal part of the business and its about getting yourself caught that shows a defining factor.  Stephen Glass was unethical yes but we see him because he got caught, in fact it’s clear that it passed every journalists mind to at least try to fabricate something.  By placing the story of Stephen Glass in film will show a clear message that everyone specially, aspiring young journalist has a choice to do the right thing.

SHARDS OF SHATTERED GLASS

Air force one's in flight magazine, the man behind the story, the question and the verdict.

The man and the magazine

The New Republic, an American magazine of politics and arts found by Herbert Croly and Walter Lippmann with the help of Dorothy Payne Whitney and her husband Willard Straight, it's first issue was published on November 7, 1914. Since then the magazine has been under different editors like Martin Peretz, Michael Kinsley, Hendrik Hertzberg, Andrew Sullivan, Peter Beinart served jointly with David Greenberg  as acting editors. It was on the time of Michael Kelly and Chuck Lane that the biggest scandal in the world of journalism happened. Stephen Glass was already working as an associate editor under Michael Kelly, he wrote rather "questionable" articles like Hazardous to your mental health and more, it was in the time Chuck Lane that Glass wrote the infamous Hack Heaven article. Adam Penenberg a reporter with Forbes- a privately held  biweekly magazine- undertook the said article to verify it believing that this Jukt Micronics and everyone in the article ever existed. Glass and Lane then travel to Maryland to do some verifying and the rest were history.

The question
It probably has been busy week for the group, and the aftermaths of  the midterm week has taken its toll on the members. It's hard and though it may seem impossible with all the things to do, we basically need to deliver. The question popped up few weeks after the viewing of the movie Shattered Glass, a wonderful movie by the way, fit for every aspiring journalist, the task was basically to comment on the question " I particularly want to know what you think of what he said in the class "You don't wanna hear all these stories about journalistic ethics, do you? All you care about is seeing your name published on that paper". How did this principle affect his career? If you were in his shoes, how would you have gotten out of that sticky situation with your editor?". The group huddled and talked about the presentation of our comments and we agreed upon making this kind of format in order to unify our thoughts as one group.

Cherryben Portacio says...
"You don't wanna hear all these stories about journalistic ethics, do you? All you care about is seeing your name published on that paper."
-Stephen Glass
That perception of Stephen Glass put him into the downfall of his writing career. It really seems like what he really want from his job is to experience the glory of byline rather than telling the public about facts. He misunderstood the essence of his job which is a very unfortunate one. He definitely ruined the chance to stay long in a prestigious publication company. All the efforts he exerted to build up his name are useless because he more chose to stay with all his liars than to do the right thing.
If I were in Stephen Glass’ shoes, what I will do to get out of such sticky situation with my editor is to just tell the truth. All the liars that Glass did only worsen the situation. Though I remembered what Cicero said that a liar is not believed even though he tell the truth. The thing is, if I can prove not only to my editor but also to everyone that I can really change, I will put my 100% effort to be a lot better and honest just to save my job. For in this kind of situation, the surest way to convey misinformation is to tell the strict truth.

Jun Frank says...
the quotation really fits me being a broadcast communication student, this is my reference point to show how i feel about the line from the movie.
let's be frank, everybody want to be on the spotlight and take the opportunity of fame. But is this case, one must realize that seeing his or her name on the paper comes next the responsibility.

journalist is a profession of writing news articles, and dissemination substantial information to public. To feed them with your journalistic side, it's important to know first the profession's ethics; here you'll know things more rewarding than fame.this mindset of thinking this profession is not about fame, could only happen if you have
learned the real concept of journalist ethics as
well as the profession itself.

A beginner is after fame
A true journalist is after ethics.

kristel says...
Principles journalist code of ethics include the truthfulness side of journalist. Shattered glass tag line 'Read between lies' and 'He'd do anything to get great story', from the tag line cited, Stephen Glass will do anything to make himself famous or can I say to read his name on every articles he published. As a journalist you are giving you
r readers accurate and true stories and information. But in the case of Stephen Glass it doesn't matter, the important for him is that his name was written on every article he published. Giving advices to the class wherein the students want to become part of the industry, will affect them by giving Stephen Glass a statement "All you car
e about is seeing your name published on that paper". Not all the journalist has the perspective in life, in what he thinks and feels about the story they published. He has these principles in life, and in the end he becomes loser. His parents wanted him to be a lawyer, but he chose to be a journalist at the age of 20.

Many of us dream to become a journalist but if you are so desperate to become one you will do what was Stephen Glass had done and if I were in his shoes, I will sincerely say sorry and tell the editor that I was so desperate to become a journalist, and tell her/him it was the only way to reach my dream. Tell my editor that I need to invent new people and story to make my story unique and famous. Whatever his/her decisions will be I will accept it with all my heart and respect his/her decisions because I know within myself that giving my readers wrong information and wrong people was wrong and I violated the code of journalist ethics.

Aira says..
I think what Stephen Glass meant when he
said "You don't wanna hear all these stories journalistic ethics do you? All you care about is seeing your name published on that paper". Is not all people taking up journalism is interested in
journalism itself. Mostly do not even care about the true essence and nature of journalism. Most of them are only after prestige, stardom and popularity that this kind of profession offers.
That principle really affected is career because, as what we have seen on the film, he didn't bother to come up with true story articles. All that he had written is just a fallacy. He made up fake articles for the sake of submitting and printing out of the news.

If I were in his shoes, the very first time that they ask me if my writings were fake, right there and then, I will confess the truth so that I won't make so much chaos in my life and on the people affected as well. But I will reason myself out. I'll tell my editor that
kind of thing because it's for the benefit of our paper. My writings are indeed very good and no one noticed that it's all fake.

Juztine says...
"You don't wanna hear all these stories about journalistic ethics, do you? All you care about is seeing your name published on that paper". Stephen Glass became famous with a snap of a finger be
cause of his "imagination" stories. This thing that Glass said to the class affects his career a lot. When Glass knew that he is being praise and admire with his story, he decline the fact that the journalists had their ethics. Journalists must be responsible, sensible and honest every time they write their articles. Glass ignored his
ethics as a journalist, and continue writing his "imaginative" articles for he just believe that readers is just looking at the byline, not on the story itself. Fame ruined his mind.

For me, what he have done is definitively a w
rong thing. Writing an article with untrue stories are already a sin, that you're fooling the public. If I were Stephen Glass, I will accept all my faults and to make it right, I'm gonna reveal everything to my editor. I'm ready to accept what penalties he is going to give
me. Also, I'm going to have an press conference to apologize and explain to my readers.

Ana says...
Being a new writer, it is a dream come true to have your name in the Byline. Anyone wants to be recognized on his line of work. Stephen Glass was one of them. He wanted so much to be recognized that he managed to create his own stories. As he stated, journalist should be responsible for his work. But he was depending on his editors. Unlike what a responsible journalist should do.

As a journalist, you shouldn't run away from something you've done. If I were in Stephen Glass' shoes, I'll face and answer what was accused of me. If I try to get away from it, and was proved it was me. If i try to get away from it, and was proved it was me, it'll be my name that will be put at risk.

Mike says....
Who wants to hear anything about that mumbo jumbo stuff on journalistic ethic and all? for ever young aspiring journalistic writer it's hard to put yourself inside a box following specific rules things to do and NOT to do, it's a hard enough task to just keep up with the latest buzz, the latest feed and after all that's been said and done you nee to deliver everything responsibly and at most ethically. Well enough of y insights, let's go back, the principle basically DESTROYED his career;Stephen Glass wrote a bunch of fictional articles posting it as fact. Now with this principle in hand and applying journalistic ethics that a journalist is responsible and stuff, well it doesn't really fit in Glass should have started his career as a novelist, a creative writer, maybe in that way he could gain the recognition he deserved. Now writing for a publication for the White house is a very huge burden to carry-writing for a newspaper company could be one thing, but to write for the heart of the most powerful country in the world is another. If I were in his shoes and I was stuck in this situation with my editor, I'd simply tell the truth, if I find myself a hard time writing as a journalist I'd just quit and start a career as a creative writer, relieving myself of all the burden. Well we all have our reasons.

Garing says...
Yes, it is a glory to have a byline. But you still need to be responsible in having it. It’s a step by step process. I would still love to hear the journalist ethics. If we do, it would be easy for us to gain more byline. What is glory if you know in yourself that you do not exert your best and your only goal is to see your name printed in your article? If I were Stephen Glass, I will do things in a proper way. He has the ability and a brilliant mind in writing. Why do he need a short cut for his victory? Although he knew to himself that he could do it. If he did, he would not lose his job. And. He is still a writer at The New Republic. Sometimes, we became blind for the things that we already have. We do not know how to be satisfied. To aim high is not bad. Just do it right. It will lead you to success.

The Polytechnic University of the Philippines is a state university provide quality education which is very affordable for its students. In fact, this is the university with the lowest tuition fee in the country.

This issue, spread through out the college that it even got space in the university publication and the college publication the spectrum.

Majority of the students are truly incapable of studying in exclusive school that requires the fortune. This are not "pahuhuli" sa country's top ranking schools every year. This means, students truly value education and try to make the most out of resources and facilities that the school can afford to offer.

Every cent is important this is from their sweat and blood of each students hard working parents. Which only means that financial really matters to them.

They are expecting that their finances go to the right allocation as possible.

No wonder why the issue spread and lots of students have got their own opinion about the illegal issuance of books which shows students concern in the university and this really matters to them.

Section 3-1 with 2009 student council CE, cited errors in the book in terms of spelling and found out the book has no substance at all that is students and provoked them to let authority know and ask action.

Management deals with the issues compulsory required books issued in College of Engineering by Prof. Roll Lisazo entitled Statistics of rigid bodies. UTIMEC uncredited the said book and other books that is no substance and errors in terms of grammatical. The College of Engineering dean DR. Manuel M. In fact President Guevarra issued office memorandum no.13 series 2009 stated, if such malpractice continued, violators will be reprimanded and will be given proper administrative sanction. From this memorandum the CE students filed a case against Prof. Lisazo because he still required his students to buy the book. Out of 100% who filed the case, 70% of them backed out. They discussed the case filed in presence of people involved Prof. Roll Lisazo, Dr. Manuel M. Muhi the concerned students and college organizations. From the sources we gather, the student council year 2009 was SAMASA, we know they are not fair and objective, the complaint students filed to SAMASA, and the compalint filed by SAMASA to legal office was different filed by the students to them. SAMASA made the complaint lettter exaggerated. College organizations supported the students particularly STudent Council(KILOs), SPECTRUM, ACCESS.

Moms knows best

The babies’ one body
By Nina Dolatre

Hi moms! Here we are again, do you know what’s latest among us moms, last night as I watch news I heard about the sad situation of a baby having two heads at the same body. This is the hardest thing for parents to see his or her child suffering from this unusual disease according to old sayings or superstitions this cases must be because of when a mother is bearing his or child their womb she might have always eaten “kambal na saging, talangka, palaka, etc”. For elders this must be the reason why a child could commit unusual features among others. As a mom staring at their child almost break my heart what more if my son does. On my own point of view, if I were the parent of the child, I’ll rather surrender my child to god than seeing him everyday suffers from the unusual situation. And as far as I believe they will never have normal life like other kids have. In scientific studies, they said this case is maybe because of genes disorder. Going back, as a mom they should not believe and rely to superstitious like this. But we should always trust and believe in god and its his will for us to have what we deserve.

A NEW MOM’s TIP!
By: Nina Dolatre

“Since I become a mom, I always wanted the best for my baby”
-Sharon Cuneta in her commercial-
Being mom is such the hardest thing to be. Baring your child for nine months in your womb is not as easy as you eat chocolates. But what is the hardest part of being a mom? Giving birth is not a joke, just like what sayings said “hindi biro ang manganak, nasahukay ang kalahati ng iyong mga paa”. And I prove it. Being a 3 weeks mom to my son is the hardest part of being a mother. I have to wake up each and every time my son wakes up and cries for milk. What more if he felt bad? I have to sacrifice all my time, my studies, my work and task just to give my time to my baby. Behind this hard time being a mom, student and as a wife, it feels good every morning you wake up staring at your son and to your husband as they smile to each other.
What can I recommend to new moms? For them or to you not to feel stress and haggard just enjoy being mom. Smile and look at the brighter side of being a mom. Just see yourself beautiful, sexy, and gorgeous and stay pretty. Stop thinking of problems and just go with the flow of your life with your new family.

How about student moms like me? How can I focus in 2 things at the same time? Simple! Multitasking. Study while your baby is sleeping or playing, do your homework if you can leave your baby to someone, and DO NOT ALLOW YOUR HUSBAND to let you do everything! That’s the power of a mom! You have the power to control your husband or your partner.
Again, be happy, beautiful, stay pretty and sexy! Your baby is your priority.
