Superstitious Beliefs

10/10/10

October 10, 2010 will bring about the unique-to-this-century calendar alignment of 10/10/10. There are three possible outcomes of this much talked date this month:
1. Something good happens — Though there is no scientific basis for this belief, lots of people still consider this date as lucky. Positivity is merely based on spiritualism, faith, and innate optimism.
2. Nothing happens— Just like 09-09-09, 08-08-08 and some other calendar alignments, Some people believes 10-10-10 will be just another day on earth. An unusual date number sequence doesn’t mean that something will happen.
3. Something bad happens— Just like the first outcome, There is no scientific basis for this belief. The reason behind this thinking is the negative side of reality for everything is in mess today.

So, what is really is it about the number 10?
Some suggested that this trinumeral might be some sort of heavenly meaning. The Holy Scripture featured numbers and frequently associates them with persistent themes. Regarding this, the number 10 is linked with unity of order. Best example is the Ten Commandments which are the set of laws by God in order for us people to be good and humble.
Some other uses of the number 10 in Bible include the 10 plagues inflicted on Egypt before the Exodus, 10 generations from Adam to Noah, and Jesus' parable of the ten virgins.

Women’s Subtleness
By: Cherryben M. Portacio

Women are known to be a delicate creature. That’s the reason why having a period is also associated with plenty of superstition. Below are some of what lots of Filipino girls hears from the elders.

1.      During the first time of menstruation, WASH your face using your menstrual
BLOOD.
Sounds really gross, Isn’t it? Crazy but true. I know some people who really did this belief. They said that this must be done to avoid having problems with pimples.
2.      JUMP on the three steps of ladders
This is what a woman should also do during her first time having period. This is said to be helpful to grow taller during puberty age. To tell you honestly, I did this and yet I am still 5”2 until now. What is more devastating fact for me is I am not in puberty age anymore.
3.   AVOID eating GREEN mangoes
My mother strongly believes in this. According to her, eating green mangoes   can result to having a stain on face that can make a girl really ugly. Because of what my mum always reminds me, sometimes I get really afraid of eating that fruit.

                                                        …for a brighter tomorrow?
                                                                 By Merlita Garing
Milks, vitamins, food and etc. It is just some of the instrument used to make us smart. Of course, we do not want to be at the bottom or at the last. We all want to have an competitive mind, it is our big asset to others. It just like, if you have it, everything will follow. That is why there are so many medicines and milk invented and produces to have a better and active mind. But before everything is invented our society knows some superstitious beliefs as a step to have a brighter mind.

Let us start with a baby. All mommies want her baby to be smart. That is why, their doing everything that they can do. While inside their womb they sing so that their child would have a good voice. They also put earphones to their tummy so that their baby could listen to it. And the first hair cut of the baby must kept inside the book. They believe that if you did these things your baby would grow smart. They want to be proud to their children someday.

The students also have their strategy in studying. There are also some superstitious beliefs that they use while reviewing their notes. Some students use their book as their pillow so that it would be easy for them to remember what’s inside the book. They also ate peanuts before the exam while reviewing their notes. And they believe that the best time to study is early morning, because if you sleep after you review your notes you will forgot it. Also taking a bath should not be done after you study it might wash away all the things that you memorized.

know Friday the 13th?
by Jun Frank C. Condrada

Who among of us are not aware of the superstition Friday the thirteen? It’s known not only in the Philippines but is also widely known in the whole world. It is believed through the years that the said date only brings bad luck. Some people take cautions that they avoid traveling to places and even going outside their houses thinking that they might just get into trouble and worse is an accident could happen. As this day comes, people have always something to say which somehow supports their position with this superstitious belief.
But only few of us know exactly when and where it came from. It is said that this belief started in 1300s, across Europe when the pope clement V decided to obliterate the knights’ templar who happened to be the church’s enemies. On October 13, 1307, the knights were captured, tortured mercilessly and finally burned at the stake as heretics. The tragedy is still resonated in this modern culture known as the Friday the 13th which is considered unlucky. Many have speculated that the date was cursed and has also been associated with other superstitions. But whatever this day might brings to us, it is only God who knows what will happen and what would the day bring to us.

Don't wear red, my friend
By Aira Burawin

One of the superstitions that I can recall that my parents told me was, to NEVER wear red when you are attending a funeral. They said that it is offensive because in Chinese (my dad has a Chinese blood), red is a lucky color and it also signifies happiness. So it simply means that when you go to a funeral wearing red, you are celebrating the death of that person.
I can also recall my a-ma (that is grandmother in Chinese) telling me that the spirit of the departed person will follow you wherever you go if you are wearing red because it is an attracting color for the spirits.
But as I grow up, I can hear different superstitions when it comes to funerals. They say that when the family of the dead is wearing white, it means, the family is accepting the death of their beloved, and the family will wear black if they are not.
So many superstitions, is there really a scientific proof behind these things? Well, I guess none. Those are just lame myths created by old people.
Yes, there’s no harm in following superstitions but as for my opinion, it does not matter on what color of clothing you are going to wear on a funeral. What matters is, you grieved for that person and you shared your deepest sympathy to the people he or she left.

9 months of creepy old sayings!
By Nina Dolatre
It’s really hard to bear a child for nine months in your womb, there are such things and superstitions that need to follow according to our elders. Things have been so complicated for me when I was on that stage.  Nine months is too long for me to follow those old saying told by my mother. Among these sayings one of the hardest things for me to do is not to take a bath every night before I sleep. Being pregnant that time I always felt hot and irritated. I can sleep well and I cannot work well when I’m stinky. There was a time when I really need not to take a bath because I chill for the whole day and I have to go to work. This was the worst day for me! I cannot work well and do my stuffs. Another saying that I heard is I should not be wearing necklace and bracelet. For what reason? They said that wearing necklace and bracelet has the tendency to affect the baby; the chord will stick around my baby’s neck. Duh? How come it could happen? But as times goes by I don’t follow this saying, because as pregnant, I want to feel beautiful in my best way as I can. Another saying that I heard and of course (again) need to follow is not to look to ugly thing and pictures, because my baby might get its look! OMG? Again? A-uh! No this time! I love reading and watching ghost stories, does it mean something? Of course not!  If this thing was true does it mean my baby will look like ghost? Ahaha! Creepy old sayings. But I the end we are the one will decide if we or will not follow this sayings, besides according to elders again “wala namang mawawala”.

                                                                     Sukob
                                                         By Juztine Dennize Santos

Filipinos are naturally superstitious.

The Filipino culture is rich with beliefs and superstitions, especially when it comes to highlights in one's life.

One of the famous is the “Sukob”. There are two kinds: sukob sa patay (death) and sukob sa kasal (marriage). The essence of the sukob belief is this: if somebody dies or somebody gets married within the immediate family members, you have to wait for a full year before getting married or else misfortune will arise from it: be it loss of material possessions, divorce, or worse, death.

“Sukob” is like a curse, especially with marriage or weddings. According to beliefs, one should not marry within the same year that an immediate family also got married or when an immediate family member passed away. The repercussion of not following this belief is that bad luck will befall upon the newly-married couple’s life.

I had watched the movie entitled “Sukob”, starring Kris Aquino and Claudine Barreto. It shows what really “Sukob” is. The misfortune that can arise from not heeding sukob was concretized in the movie. No sooner had Kris Aquino gotten married (of course following all the advice of their parents) than bad luck started following them, even involving their close relatives. A "happily ever after" story it's not. They become baffled, especially since they did follow all the beliefs laid out before them. When they finally realize the cause, it was due to a big lie that was kept hidden from them for many years.

Some Filipinos still believe in this superstition. Others follow it just to make sure that nothing bad will happen to their married life. There are also a few who don’t believe at all and just go on with their plans and leave all else to the Omniscient One.

Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD. - Job 1:21
By: Michael Angelo Angeles

While Contemplating these past few weeks about a perfect topic regarding superstitions, Ive decided to lay out all those typical mumbo jumbo that you may hear from almost everyone and focus on something new, something fresh. The quote from Job 1:21, fits perfectly to the most popular Filipino superstar today, and please spare me the usual pleasantries because were not here to talk about a little Timbaland look alike who recently had her huge huge HUGE break in the Fag show Glee. I'm talking about the Mexican Destroyer, the best Pound for Pound king in the boxing ring, the pride of the country, his excellency Manny Pacman Pacquiao.

If you're a boxing fan like i am, you should have followed the rise of the former panadero from Malabon. Emmanuel D. Pacquiao may have one of the most colorful rags to riches story ever told, presently serving as a public servant in Sarangani province, its been a good run for the Filipino boxer. Amidst the recent speculations and mud thrown to him by the press, we have to agree that he shows shows a good example to all those "bigshot" seniors in the House of Representatives who do nothing but squabble and linger about lost issues, at least we have to agree that a freshman like Manny could knock the sense out of the fat obnoxious leaders seated at the house.

But certainly we all have heard of the superstition that lingers in the Filipino champ. I haven't been properly updated about this but i believe that it was not properly documented that everytime Pacman won, something bad happens, it's like his rise to success has it's consequences, now i havent been able to be updated about the situation but since the Oscar Dela Hoya fight, where the actor Marky Cielo died, when the Ricky Hatton fight happened, so did the rice shortage here in the Philippines, before the destruction of Miguel Cotto, Marikina, Pasig, and the whole of Manila was knocked out by typhoon Ondoy. Now im not here to rain on the Pacman's parade, i admit that since the destruction of the Golden Boy, i became a believer that Pacman is the man, this might just be pure coincidence and i may just make up stuff connecting unconnected topics to raise something interesting, but by clear observation and further research maybe we can connect the dots.

It maybe somewhat offensive to some of the hardcore Pacman fans out there but lets face it that you cant actually have everything, and if ever the big man up there gives us, he also takes something in return. If we look at the delays regarding the fight of the century where the undefeated meets the pound for pound king, lets just look at it as somewhat a blessing in disguise, we may be the lucky generation who may witness the fight, but if the consequence is rather dire, something worth the price of the "gravity" of the fight, well, I for one don't want this fight to happen. I would like to apologize if i haven't been able to write as pessimistically as before, its just I am currently having a bit of problems in stuff, I know that this is not an excuse, and i promise to make up to my past trash.

BROKEN HEAD IN THE MIRROR
By: Ivy Joana Habana

Have you ever heard the saying that, whenever you look at the mirror and you saw a broken head of yours you are going to die?.

Filipinos are very much fund of "superstitions", but what do we really mean by that?

"Superstitions" are beliefs that occur in an event that do not really have a connection in a certain phenomena. It is actually sayings that pertain to unfortunate events like death, sickness, misfortune and etc.,

Now, I have here one of the beliefs that Filipinos live up to. They say that whenever you look at the mirror and you saw your head is broken you will going to die. How true is this?
Are there really proofs that this happen?

Filipinos Indeed, are fan of "superstitions" it is already a part of our culture. Most of our
ancestors really believe in this, they really follow the do's and dont's of superstitions.

But in this generation, yes we may believe but we are not 100% believe if it will really happen.

Yes, superstition is already part of our daily lives. But we must remember that there is God who will always guide and protect us. We should also remember that there is no harm in following those beliefs, but it life will always depends on our actions and on how we live with it.

Say ‘I do’ on 10-10-10!
By Ana Besa

In China, the cross represents the number 10 - as the totality of the numbers.
Just like 8-8-8, October 10, 2010 is a lucky date for soon-to-be-wed couples. 10-10-10 is the perfect 10 wedding date. Many couples have scheduled their sacred ceremony that will bond them for life.
In Shanghai, which is said to be the 2nd most expensive city to be married to, the wedding office announced that they will be open, even on a Sunday to give the couples a perfect wedding. It is rare for local government workers to work overtime, but because of this wonderful date, the wedding registration office will give way for the couples who wanted to be married on this special date.

According Alice Huo, a future 10-10-10 bride, they believe that a good date will allow them a good beginning.
Not only in Asia, also in the Western side, couples aim for this auspicious date. Like Helen Kalogjera and Jason Moore, who will be wed on a date they said they’ll always remember.
This date has no astrological meaning behind it.  This makes it propitious, since it only comes once in a century. The next 10-10-10 will happen on Oct 10, 2110, making the date this year a once in a lifetime occurrence.
But still, no matter what luck this number has, it will still depend on the couple if they will be beside each other in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; from that day forward until death do they part.
