Depressing Sunday
By Ana Besa

‘Gloomy Sunday with a hundred white flowers I was waiting for you my dearest with a prayer’

Gloomy Sunday, a song for a broken heart, is feared by many. Rezso Seress, who committed suicide in 1968, is the Hungarian pianist and composer of the so-called Hungarian suicide song.
It is true that the song sounds depressing because of its sad melody. It also seemed that the song gained infamy because of the large number of suicides.

After some time it was released, urban legends connected to the song sprung. It was said that many people have committed suicide after hearing the song. Even Seress committed suicide after the song had been a hit, which actually added fuel to the fire.
However, these stories about suicides are all alleged; most of the stories are not proved.  Listeners in the internet have said that they had been listening to the song, but they are still alive. Maybe for some, Gloomy Sunday really is a suicidal song. But for others, it is just one of those creepy songs they would forget under a pile of music files in their iPods.

MUSIKA SA MAYNILA
 By Ana Besa

I AM THE MAN FROM MANILA.
This week, we’ve walked, literally, around Manila to see how vast the city really is. Now that’s what you call adventure! And of course, we’ve visited places where you can get music-related stuffs.
First stop, Quiapo.

Who doesn’t know where the renowned Quiapo church is? Other than the church, Quiapo is also pretty famous for DVD and CD stores. If you’ve been to Hidalgo before, you know what I mean.
For first-timers, if you’re coming from the church, you have to cross the underpass to get to the pirate den. The moment you step foot on Hidalgo, you’ll understand what I’ve been telling you all this while.
For as low as 35php, you can get DVDs, VCDs, CDs. To  those who really are on a tight budget, now that’s really cheap.  There are also hard-to-find stuffs, like live concerts which were sold for 45php. You can also try your haggling skills and maybe they’ll give it to you in lower price.
This is already a part of Manila. Even if it is raided again and again, I don’t think it would stop the trend in Quiapo. However, this is also the reason for artists’ frustration.

If you’re into gadgets such as Mp3’s and Mp4’s, say hello to Carriedo.

When you are into saving money, you find inexpensive stuffs. That’s what Carriedo offers. Don’t limit yourself to only one store. There are plenty of stores. Just go check them all.

There are many record bars in Manila. So if you’re into original anything’s, check out Odyssey.
Odyssey Records is the country’s largest, most innovative, most geographically dispersed and comprehensive retailer of CD’s, tapes, videos and audio/video accessories.

Opening its first store in Greenhills, Odyssey’s branches are now mostly in malls around the Metro.
Here is the list of Odyssey stores in Manila City:
Odyssey Address: Harrison Plaza, A. Mabini St..cor. M. Adriatico St., Manila City, Metro Manila, Philippines Telephone No: (632) 524-2422
Odyssey Address: Robinsons Place Manila, M. Adriatico St., Manila City, Metro Manila, Philippines Telephone No: (632) 536-7941
Odyssey Address: SM San Lazaro, , Manila City, Metro Manila, Telephone No: (632) 786-2515

SM Record Bars

SM Record Bars are also recommended for music lovers.  Check out SM Sta. Mesa(Centerpoint) at Ramon Magsaysay Boulevard corner Araneta Avenue, Barangay Dona Imelda, Quezon City, SM San Lazaro at Felix Huertas St corner Lacson Ave (C-2 Road), Santa Cruz, Manila and SM Manila at Natividad Almeda-Lopez (formerly called Concepcion) corner A. Villegas (formerly called Arroceros) and San Marcelino Streets, Ermita,
