Beggars in Manila
By Merlita Garing

Manila is the central capital of the Philippines. Most of the people in province wantto go here to try their luck. It is the place for them to earn money. As what the street childrendid. They are everywhere, but this is their target place. They beg for some alms to support their. When I was first Year College I was amazed to the street children in divisoria, they are different. They have different techniques to get alms. Not all of them would just try to block your way and try to get some coins from you. There are some who rode to jeep then wipe the shoes of the passenger. Another one is a business of a pair. The one will sang while playing his/her drum made by can and rubber band, and his/her partner would give the envelope to the passenger and dance to the middle. It's dangerous but theres still more. Their ways upgraded because of their needs.Years pass by and they still doing it. They work so hard for their family. Like today,Christmas is on it’s way. Beggars work hard for Christmas. I heard again the Christmas song coming out from their mouth. I wonder why they are still waiting for Christmas. Is it because of Santa Claus? Are they wishing for a better life to him? Or they just want to go with the flow of this world? Culture. Yes, it is part of the Filipino culture. Even though we do not have enough money for our daily needs we still prepare for Christmas? Beggars population is getting bigger. Manila became their playground and their sleep place. They are roaming everywhere even though some of them have their home. Some of them are just left behind because of poverty. They did not want it to happen in their lives. They are the innocent victims of poverty. They are hungry that is why they need to work. ForThem, they need to earn to have a better life. They also want to escape poverty. We are lucky we do not have to suffer like the children's suffering. That is why we should give thanks and be satisfied for everything that God has given us.

Today, they are still asking for alms to satisfy their roaring stomach. Sometimes they areirritating but honestly I pity them a lot. I just can give a smaller amount of coins and sometimes only a one peso coin. I can’t do anything just to symphatize them at a deeper level. Actually I have a lot of questions to them about their life on the street. This article is inspired by badjao in manila that also begging for alms, but sadly I was not given a chance to talk anyone of them.

FEEL BETTER ABOUT YOURSELF

                                                   By: Merlita Garing

The sky is so refreshing. Have a deep breath. Always start your day with a big smile. Do not think any negative things. Make your day, it’s yours. Do not feel bad about yourself. Take away your problems. It will only put you to a down situation. We all need to gain our self-esteem. And I’ve already got the solution to boost our self esteem. Steeve B. Reed caught my attention to his article that enumerates the ten positive messages that we may replace to esteem busters.

1. I HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE HERE. – Always think that wherever you are, you are there because you should be there. Be comfortable in your place. Your part of that place. Do not try to look for the things that will tell to yourself that you should not be there. Feel free.

2. I AM ALREADY ENOUGH. – Stand on your own. It doesn’t mean that you should be individualistic. Just try to develop yourself on your own. It will help you to boost your self esteem. Because sometimes our friends or companion played an over role in our life to the point that we will do most of the things with him/her. You yourself is enough in doing things.

3. I AM WORTHWHILE. – Yes, you are worthwhile. Know your worth. It’s your sword every time you face other people. The people will know your worth only if you know in the first place your worth. It is you not then who will tell your worthiness.

4. I AM VALUABLE. – Value yourself. How? Accept yourself in all aspect. If you know how to value yourself people around you would feel how much you do. After that, they will value you too.

5. I AM SIGNIFICANT. – Know the meaning of your life. If you are able to know your worth and know how to value yourself it would be easy to your significance. Your significance why you exist in this world.

6. I AM GLAD TO BE MYSELF. – do not compare yourself to others. You are different to them and they are different to you. Be happy on what you have and what you are. Because it was you, nothing else but you. Be glad that you exist and you have the things that in your life now.

7. IT IS OK TO THINK WELL OF MYSELF – know how to prioritize yourself. To think for yourself doesn’t mean you’re selfish just know your limit. Think for yourself in a positive way.

8. IT IS OK TO TAKE EXCELLENT CARE FOR MYSELF. – Be careful. Not just to others but especially for yourself. Accept that we all are weak. And we need to take care ourselves because it is the only instrument of our existence in the world. Give the best care for yourself. Tender loving care.

9. I AM CAPABLE OF LEARNING. – We all need to be open in learning process. Believe in yourself that you have the capacity to learn new things.

10. I CAN OWN MY STRENGTHS. – We have different strength. And we have our own strength that comes from ourselves. It is yours. Do not depend yourself to other. Nothing is permanent. If we will depend our strength to other it would be hard for us to be strong in times that we need it already.

People learn to feel bad about themselves and they can learn to feel good as well. The beliefs about oneself that lead to low-self esteem can be changed. Just do the right thing and all things will be alright.
